Wine Goblets
Choosing the perfect wine goblets shouldn’t be intimidating or confusing. After all, there are no “right” or “wrong” wine glasses (also called stemware). It’s really all a matter of personal preference. Traditionally, larger, deeper glasses hold red wines, while smaller glasses are used to serve whites, but you can break with tradition and serve your wines in whatever goblets you choose, it’s all up to you. Today, wines are served in everything from tumblers to champagne flutes, and just about everything in between. There are some things to think about when you’re looking for the perfect wine glasses, however.
One thing to think about is the size of the wine goblet. If you choose a goblet that’s too big, your guests may have trouble finishing it, while if you pick one that’s too small, they’ll need several refills. Smaller glasses are perfect for tastings, but not so much for large dinner parties. Look at the size ratio to the size and width of the stem, too. A large glass on a thin stem could lead to a broken stem and the loss of the glass, so make sure the stem is sturdy enough to support the glass and the glass isn’t top heavy when it’s filled with wine.
Another important aspect of choosing the best wine goblets is the size of the rim of the glass. If you choose a glass with a thick rim, it may be uncomfortable for your guests to drink from the glass. Size is important for serving, but weight and feel are important for holding the glass. Pick it up and hold it in your hand. Is it awkward or uncomfortable to hold? If your guests are going to be walking around at a cocktail party holding the glass, will they want to put it down after only a few minutes?
Finally, think about color and features. Colored wine goblets are not as traditional, and they don’t show off the wine as well, but they are a great alternative for trendy get-togethers. For formal dinners, think about crystal or cut-crystal stemware that makes a statement and compliments your dinnerware nicely. If
you don’t have the storage space for several sets of wine glasses, choose one size and shape that fits your needs, and leave it at that. The best wine goblets are the ones that fit your lifestyle and your wine drinking habits, so don’t worry about tradition when you choose your glasses, choose what you like and what works for you.
